Ever had one of those days where you hit snooze too many times, your socks don’t match, you spill your coffee (on the white shirt, naturally), and your to-do list feels like it’s doubling every hour? If your answer’s yes, you’re definitely not alone. Rough days happen to all of us, and sometimes they hit harder than we’d like to admit. But what if I told you there are tiny joys tucked into even the most bonkers days, waiting to flip that mood switch?

This blog is all about finding those simple, feel-good moments that can help you turn a rough day around, no matter what life decides to throw your way. We'll dig into the science behind tiny joys, I’ll share an embarrassingly honest personal moment, hand you some practical ideas for a quick mood-upgrade, and show you how humour, resilience, and community make a difference. Plus, I’ll introduce you to how the Fearless Pursuit community lives these values out loud.

If you’re ready to transform your next “ugh” day, you’re in the right place.

Understanding the Impact of Small Joys

What Are "Tiny Joys"?

Tiny joys are those underrated, easy-to-snag moments of happiness that slip into your daily routine almost unnoticed. Think the first sip of hot coffee, sunlight through your window, your favourite song blasting in the car, or the feeling of finally ticking something off your list. It’s not champagne and caviar; it’s comfort, ease, and tiny sparks of “hey, that feels good.”

How Tiny Joys Shape Our Mood and Wellbeing

There’s real science behind the impact of little pleasures on our mental health. Research in positive psychology shows that small, positive experiences can break the cycle of stress and negative thinking, helping boost your overall mood and build resilience. Even micro-moments of satisfaction trigger your brain’s reward system, lowering cortisol (that’s the stress hormone) and making it easier to bounce back from the day’s drama. [1] And the best part? You don’t need big things to feel better. Just intentionally noticing, celebrating, or creating these small moments is enough to start shifting your day.

"It Is What It Is" and My Bed Rot Session

How I turn a rough day into a feel-good one:

Most people have a favourite saying for when life starts stacking up. Mine? “It is what it is.” It rolls out whenever the tough gets going, and trust me, it’s seen some action. But I’ve noticed something about myself on rough days, especially when all the stress piles up like dirty laundry, I go straight for a cheeky “bed rot” session.

Yes, bed rot. That’s when you just lie in bed, scrolling, letting your brain flatten out until you can barely tell what day it is. Sometimes, it’s a reset. Other times, it’s a rut. My self-awareness usually kicks in (thanks to way too many cycles with this pattern), and I catch myself thinking, “Right, enough’s enough.” That’s when I start tackling chores. No one likes chores (if you say you do, sorry, but you can’t sit with us).

What’s funny is how quickly my brain flips once I’m up doing something, even the boring stuff. By the time the dishes are done, I’m literally thinking (mind my French), “Mate, if you can be going through all that and still manage the boring life admin, you’re basically iconic and can handle anything.” Weird? Maybe. But it works. That’s the power of tiny joys; they sneak in when you least expect them and kick off a shift from dread to low-key empowerment.

Actionable Tiny Joys to Incorporate

You don’t have to overhaul your whole life to start feeling better on a rubbish day. Here are some proven, super do-able ways to add little sparkles of goodness:

1. Listen to a Favourite Song

Throw on your go-to jam, the one that always makes you want to dance or brings a small wince-smile. Music’s a mood-mover, with studies confirming that upbeat or nostalgic tracks can quickly adjust emotions.

2. Enjoy a Warm Drink

There’s science behind the soothing effect of a warm drink. Cuppa tea, coffee, or even sneaky hot choccie can be grounding. The little ritual helps you focus and signals your brain to slow down.

3. Step Outside for Fresh Air

A quick wander, stretch, or even just standing on the balcony can reset your headspace. Sunshine (or rain, for the drama points) works wonders for both your physical and mental health.

4. Read a Chapter of an Engaging Book

Losing yourself in a story, even for 10 minutes, lets your brain take a breather and shifts your focus from “all the things” to something fun or inspiring.

5. Practice Deep Breathing Exercises

Try box breathing (inhale four, hold four, exhale four, hold four). It’s a trick widely used by athletes and high-performers to ground themselves, and it really can pull you back from the edge of overwhelm.

Hot Take: I know when you get to the deep breathing part, your first thought might be, "Is this a joke?" Honestly, I felt the same way. When my counselor first shared these techniques with me, I couldn’t help but laugh. But turns out, they actually work.

Resilience and Humour

Why Laughing Matters

When life gets ridiculous, sometimes the only sane thing to do is laugh. Humour helps break up the heaviness, defusing tension and letting you process challenges with a lighter touch. Studies point out that laughter isn’t just fun; it lowers blood pressure and increases endorphins, meaning you're actually fighting back against stress with every chuckle.[2]

Finding the Funny in Everyday Life

Look for the little “oops” moments that would make a great story later. Like when you’ve worn your shirt inside-out all day or mess up a Zoom call background (hello, potato filter). It sounds silly, but sharing these mishaps can connect you to others and shine a softer light on your own imperfections.

Building a Growth Mindset

Tiny Joys and Your Growth Mindset

Choosing to notice and create small joys throughout your day isn’t just about flipping the mood, it’s a mindset shift. By actively seeking out positives, you’re training your brain to look for possibilities, not roadblocks. That’s the core of a growth mindset; the belief that improvement is possible, progress matters, and setbacks are seeds for future wins.

Growth Mindset Benefits

People with a growth mindset show more resilience in tough times, bounce back faster, and are statistically more likely to succeed in goals that matter to them. It’s about being kind to yourself on hard days, celebrating the micro-wins, and knowing that change is built from the smallest bricks.
