Ever found yourself staring at a to-do list so long it makes you want to run away and join the circus? Or maybe, like me, you've scheduled an “urgent” Clash of Clans battle when you know you should be prepping for that big client report. You’re not alone. Procrastination is a sneaky beast, but it doesn’t have to call the shots. If you’re tired of feeling stuck, craving change, and ready to break free, this guide will take you from spinning your wheels to hitting the accelerator.
Why we procrastinate (and why it’s not just laziness)
We often think procrastination comes down to poor discipline or just a case of the “can’t be bothereds.” The truth runs much deeper. Understanding what’s really going on is the first, most powerful step to change.
The psychology behind procrastination
Most of us procrastinate not because we’re lazy, but because we want to:
Avoid failure (what if I try and fall flat?)
Escape discomfort (how do I even start this?)
Chase perfection (if it’s not 100%, is it even worth trying?)
Throw in a bit of overwhelm, a splash of boredom, and a phone full of addictive apps, and you’ve got the perfect storm.
Common triggers and scenarios
Sound familiar?
Big projects that feel too massive to tackle
Tasks that seem dull, pointless, or out of alignment with your interests
Work that requires skills you don’t feel confident in
Days when your energy is low or your mental load is maxed out
For me, nothing triggers procrastination quite like needing to invest my time on stuff that drains me. Give me a spreadsheet and I’ll suddenly remember my crops in Clash of Clans need harvesting. My dedication to procrastination even comes with a leaderboard (I just wish it counted at work).
The toll procrastination takes
When you avoid action, tiny things become monsters in your mind. Suddenly, a simple email becomes a mountain, and that unfinished assignment? It’s haunting your dreams. Productivity drops. Anxiety rises. Your well-being takes a hit. Clarity around what lights you up? Lost somewhere between your inbox and level 9 archers.
But through this, I learnt that we have way more control than we give ourselves credit for.

Practical ways to overcome procrastination and regain control
It’s time to turn those sticky moments of resistance into momentum. Here are tried-and-true strategies that helped me go from stuck to unstoppable.
Start small, move often
Big changes start with ridiculously tiny steps:
Break tasks down. Swap “Write my resume” for “Draft bullet points for experience section.”
Set micro-goals. Decide to work on something for two minutes. You’ll usually keep going.
Celebrate progress. Acknowledge every little win (yes, even closing your ten browser tabs counts).
It’s not about getting everything done at once. It’s about creating momentum that builds over time.
The 5-minute rule
If a task feels intimidating, promise yourself you’ll just do five minutes. No pressure for perfection or completion. Just five minutes. More often than not, you’ll end up doing much more; but hey, if not, you still moved forward.
Use time-blocking and schedules
Our brains love routine. Schedule your day in “blocks” dedicated to focused work, and try using tools like Google Calendar to map it all out. Phone on silent, Clash of Clans app hidden (okay, maybe just for a little while).
Find or create accountability
Tell someone what you plan to do. Text a mate, join an online study/work group, or share your goals in our comment section. There’s power in being seen.
Finding your drive…what lights the spark within?
You can tackle procrastination from the outside, but the real transformation starts inside. If you want lasting change, tap into what truly lights you up.
Align tasks with your values
When you’re working on something that matters to you, motivation comes easier.
Ask yourself, “Why does this matter to me?”
What’s the bigger impact if I finish this task?
Does this align with the person I want to become?
If your drive feels flat, chances are you’re disconnected from your “why.” That was me when I realised half of my to-do list was stuff that drained me rather than energised me. Once I started saying yes to what fuelled my passion (and set boundaries around the rest), everything shifted.
Set clear, meaningful goals
Vague intentions like “I’ll try to work on my website this week” are hard to stick to. Instead, set goals you can see and track:
“I’ll write the About page by Wednesday.”
“I’ll spend 15 minutes brainstorming blog ideas after breakfast.”
Make it concrete, and make it matter to you.
Build a motivating environment
Surround yourself with objects, people and reminders that inspire you:
A vision board or list of big reasons you’re working on your goal
Uplifting playlists that get you moving
Decluttering your workspace (I know, easier said than done)
Building resilience and staying the course
No matter how committed you are, hard days happen. Here’s how to keep going, even when setbacks hit.
Deal with setbacks (without beating yourself up)
Mess up? Welcome to the club. Sometimes you’ll trip, binge on memes, or yes, dedicate entire afternoons to building your Clash of Clans empire. The trick isn’t avoiding failure altogether, but rebounding with kindness.
Practice self-compassion. Talk to yourself like you’d talk to a friend.
Reframe setbacks. Missed a deadline? Ask, “What can I learn, rather than, what did I do wrong?”
Learn from mistakes. Each misstep is data you can use next time (shoutout to Clash of Clans for teaching patience and perseverance, if nothing else).
Celebrate the small wins
If you’re waiting for a parade every time you tick off a task, you’ll wait forever. Celebrate little victories:
Mark an “X” in your diary for every day you move forward.
Treat yourself to a fancy tea or a walk outside.
Share your progress with friends (or with us on Instagram).
The power of support and community
You don’t have to do this alone. Surrounding yourself with encouragers and accountability partners can make the biggest difference.
Find your people
Our Fearless Pursuit blog is all about growth, laughter, and sharing real-life struggles (meme swaps welcome, of course).
You might be surprised by how many others face the same battles. Sharing stories, resources, and victories, even the small ones; fuels motivation on the days you need it most.
Make your next move: from stuck to unstoppable
Procrastination isn’t a permanent label. It’s a habit you can shift, one small step at a time.
Next time you catch yourself reaching for your phone like it’s a lifeline (yes, you, Clash of Clans champion), pause and pick just one thing from this list to try. Maybe you’ll start with a five-minute task; maybe you’ll reach out to our community for an accountability boost.
You’ve got more drive than you know, and every action, even if it’s small, is proof you’re capable of so much more.
